Librarian's Fall Conference

Friday, October 12th, I had the pleasure of attending the yearly fall conference for librarians held at Queens College. As usual, it was a well planned, well organized day, starting with the continental breakfast. All of the organizers deserve high praise for their work on the conference. The conference is actually held on two days. The first day was for elementary librarians, and the second day was for secondary librarians. We were all treated to a wonderful gift bag that included: a collector's edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, a professional book related to history, a dvd about the Mayflower voyage, and Spike Lee's documentary about Hurricane Katrina. There were also a plethora of vendors in attendance. I attended a workshop with the children's librarian from Bank Street College, Lisa Von Drasek. She discussed high interest books for middle age students. Lisa is a very dynamic presenter, and all who were in attendance learned a lot and received free books at the end. If any librarians missed the conference, they truly missed a wonderful day.

I received a free subscription to Atomic Learning. This site provides online training for a variety of applications. Also, I learned more about TeachingBooks.net. This site has author programs, book guides, book readings, and author websites all in one place. The NYC Dept. of Education has its own subscription to this wonderful site. Ask your librarian about it. If you want to learn more about this wonderful resource, they are offering a free webinar on Monday, October 22 at: http://teachingbooks.net/NYCwebinar. The webinar is only 30 minutes from 3:00-3:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).
